An open letter to telemarketers…oops…to politicians
Dear Senator Hultgren,
A few moments ago, I received yet another telemarketing political call and this one had your name attached to it. Your representative was very polite and promised to deliver the following message to you, but I just wanted to ensure that what I have to say actually hits the mark.
In 2003, a majority of politicians voted in favor of the national Do Not Call registry, advocating for people who were fed up with annoying and uninvited telemarketing calls. This continues to be wonderful thing, however; the politicians noticeably kept political calls exempt from this registry. This year in particular, the abundance of political calls has simply exploded out of control – we receive multiple calls every day.
I want to tell politicians that their phone calls (live or recorded) are unwelcome, but so far, my complaints (to the live callers) have fallen on deaf ears. At this point, my only recourse is to withhold my vote for those politicians who selfishly interrupt my time and my schedule.
Why call people at home? Is it because politicians feel this is a proactive way to sway voters to their side? Of course it is. Here’s the problem: how is that any different than a business trying to gain customers with telemarketing? There is NO difference. Your phone call was just as annoying and intrusive and unwelcome on my Saturday morning as if you were soliciting chimney sweep services. If you’re elected, do the right thing and add political calls to the do not call registry – or create a special category for those who do not wish to receive political calls. If you want to re-earn my vote, that’s what you’ll have to do.
